Postoperative pulmonary complications, in particular after open abdominal surgery and general anaesthesia, add to the morbidity and mortality of surgical patients. Whether a mechanical ventilation strategy using higher levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and repeated recruitment manoeuvres protects against postoperative pulmonary complications is uncertain. The present study aims at comparing mechanical ventilation this protective strategy with conventional mechanical ventilation during nonlaparoscopic abdominal surgery and seeks to assess the effect on postoperative pulmonary complications.
