Each center will make their own evaluation as to the criteria used to determine a complication (below). The suggestions in parentheses are general recommendations.

  • Myocardial infarction (EKG changes or symptoms and/or typical troponin changes (rise and fall)
  • Cardiac failure (Increased NT-proBNP, EKO diagnosed or requiring treatment in consultation with a cardiologist)
  • Major arrythmias (new atrial fibrillation, Ventricular tachycardia, malignant ventricular arrythmias, cardiac arrest)
  • Stroke/TIA (International definition)
  • Postoperative cognitive dysfunction
  • Acute Kidney Injury (RIFLE or KIDGO criteria)
  • Surgical site infection (if antibiotics given by surgeons for treatment)
  • Chest infection (if antibiotics given for treatment)
  • Urinary infection (if antibiotics given for treatment)
  • Other infection (if antibiotics given for treatment)
  • Postoperative ventilation/non-invasive ventilation in recovery/ICU
  • Unanticipated ICU admission
  • Reoperation due to bleeding
  • Massive bleeding (>10 ERC + Plasma replacement during surgery/within 24t)
  • Major coagulation abnormality requiring specific medical management
  • DVT/pulmonary embolus (Clinical suspicion or radiological diagnosis) requiring specific management
  • Other complications delaying home discharge
  • Readmission to hospital within 30 days due to medical/surgical complication
  • Death within 30 days
