Key points of this webinar:
- Women with COVID-19 should be offered labour epidural analgesia wherever possible
- Cesarean delivery appears more likely according to published series of COVID-19
- Strategies including early labour analgesia may avoid the need for general anaesthesia for cesarean delivery
- During cesarean delivery, general anaesthesia may be required, and appropriate protection should be available to the medical team
- Symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever should not be confused with common obstetric conditions such as chorioamnionitis
Learning Objectives:
This webinar will enable caregivers of patients with COVID-19 to:
- Understand the challenges to manage obstetric patients with COVID-19, including identification, screening, tools for setting up a suitable environment in the labour ward, family member presence and postpartum recovery and considerations for the safety of anaesthesiologists
- Learn decision paradigms for providing timely efficient labour analgesia to women with COVID-19, with specific consideration of the sick patient
- Discuss management of cesarean delivery including mode of anaesthesia and minimizing the need for emergency care through timely early decisions
