EA21 Newsletter: Best Abstract Competition 2021 – Results
Each year our panel of expert judges finds it very difficult to pick a winner, second and third place from the finalists, and this year’s selection was no exception. The judging panel of former ESAIC President Daniela Filipescu (Romania) together with Ana Kowark (Germany) and Mona Momeni (Belgium) had eight high-quality pieces to choose from. EA21 Newsletter: Men aged 40-80 more likely to die after surgery than women of the same age, German study finds
Middle-aged men are around 50% more likely to die after surgery than middle-aged women, according to new research being presented at this year’s Euroanaesthesia. The study of more than 100,000 non-cardiac patients at a leading German hospital found that mortality rates are higher in men in their 40s and 50s, as well as those in their 60s and 70s.

EA21 Newsletter: Muscles seem to grow, rather than shrink, in some critically ill Covid patients
Muscles appear to grow, rather than shrink, in some critically ill COVID-19 patients, finds new research being presented in an abstract at this year’s Euroanaesthesia.
Bed rest and mechanical ventilation can lead to muscle wastage, which can hamper recovery and affect mobility and quality of life. Previous research has shown that muscle fibres atrophy by almost 20% after a week in ICU. There are concerns, however, that Covid may lead to even greater muscle damage.
