Newsletter January 2024: Elevating Excellence - Overview of the ESAIC Education Calendar 2024

Education lies at the heart of ESAIC. As we welcome the year 2024, ESAIC continues its commitment to providing top-notch education opportunities for professionals in the field. This article explores the diverse range of education activities scheduled for ESAIC 2024 and why these activities are the core of our mission.  

Education Calendar 2024 

ESAIC 2024 education activities are strategically designed to elevate healthcare professionals practising anaesthesia and intensive care knowledge and competencies. With a broad spectrum of learning opportunities, ESAIC guarantees practitioners stay abreast of the latest developments and best practices in their respective domains.

During 2024, the ESAIC will continue offering a comprehensive array of education activities across various learning tracks, ensuring that professionals at all career stages can benefit from our offerings. Our learning tracks cover a wide range of topics, catering to various interests and expertise levels within the medical community.


In January, we commence the year with two thought-provoking podcasts. The first, titled “Mediation in Medicine,” explores the delicate art of defusing conflicts between families and medical teams, a crucial skill in healthcare. Our second podcast, “What ESAIC can do for you,” offers a recap of 2023 and outlines our ambitious resolutions for 2024, providing a comprehensive overview of how we aim to support you in your professional journey. 

Moving on to January‘s webinar, we delve into “Anaphylaxis in Anaesthesia,” focusing on identification, treatment, and future trends in this critical area of patient care. 

February continues to be a month of enriching experiences, beginning with a “TryMe Quiz” centred around “Follow-up Brain Health 2023.” This interactive quiz will challenge your knowledge of brain health in the context of anaesthesia and critical care. Our subsequent webinar, “Brain death: from diagnosis to organ donation,” explores a complex and sensitive topic, shedding light on the intricate process of organ donation. 

February‘s podcasts are equally compelling, with “The Friday midnight ICU readmission” offering insights into the challenges of readmissions and “Captivating Careers” featuring a conversation with Jennifer Hunter, sharing her remarkable journey in the field. A highlight of February is the “Advanced Patient Safety Course” in the form of a masterclass, providing an opportunity for in-depth learning and skill development. 

March brings us a webinar on “Preeclampsia,” addressing anaesthetic considerations in the operating room and intensive care unit, while our podcasts delve into the vital topics of “Sustainability in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care” and “The Known Unknowns” in paediatric perioperative care. 

As we transition into June, we focus on “Mental health and capacity” in a thought-provoking podcast, shedding light on the importance of mental well-being in healthcare professionals. 

In April, we kick off our educational journey with the first Learning Track focusing on Pain, where we will address topics such as “Chronic postsurgical pain” in our podcast and “Pain management in opiate dependence patients undergoing surgery” in a compelling webinar. We will also delve into the physiology of pain with a “TryMe Quiz” and contemplate the reality of intraoperative pain monitoring in another engaging podcast. 

Meanwhile, May sees us revisiting Learning Track, focusing on the Heart, with webinars on “Cardiogenic shock” and “Cardiac arrest in the operating room” during our “Guidelines o’clock.” 

In June, we will start exploring the Lung as part of the Learning Track, focusing on the Lung with a “TryMe Quiz” focused on “Post-operative pulmonary complications.”  

In July, our educational journey will continue with a thought-provoking podcast focusing on the Lung titled “One lung ventilation, keeping it simple.” This podcast will delve into the intricacies of lung ventilation, simplifying the complexities for an easier grasp.  

Moving into August, we have a dynamic webinar in the same Learning Track  – the Lung, entitled “Lung ultrasound in anaesthesia and critical care.” This session will explore the crucial role of lung ultrasound in enhancing patient care within the realms of anaesthesia and critical care. 

September promises to be exciting as we transition to Learning Track, focusing on Haemodynamic. We begin with a stimulating “TryMe Quiz” on “Haemodynamic Monitoring in ICU,” followed by a webinar on “Non-invasive continuous haemodynamic monitoring during major surgery.” Additionally, our podcast will provide a comprehensive review of the most relevant publications on haemodynamics. 

As we approach October, Learning Track  – the Heart takes centre stage. In “Guidelines O’clock,” we will explore the significance of cardiac biomarkers in perioperative risk evaluation. Subsequently, our webinar titled “Anaesthesia for the high-risk cardiac patient” promises to be an insightful discussion. 

ESAIC’s educational calendar for 2024 is packed with captivating and insightful activities throughout the year. You can choose from podcasts, webinars, try-me quizzes, masterclasses, and more, covering a wide range of topics in anaesthesia and critical care, such as acute kidney failure, neuraxial anaesthesia for c-sections, neonatal airway management, statistics, research methodology, trunk blocks for abdominal surgery, and failing regional anaesthesia in obstetric care.
